Term 2

Term 2 Update!

We have been very busy so far this term with all sorts of things going on such as the dental van, scripture, cross country, school photos and Yr 4 Check-In assessments. There’s much more coming so stay tuned!

Writing: This term we are focusing on persuasive writing. We are learning how to create a compelling argument that persuades the reader to side with us. We have been learning to use persuasive language which helps get the point across in a confident and convincing way. Also, when writing, we have been focusing on using a variety of sentence types i.e. simple, compound and complex to make our writing more interesting.

Speeches: Students should have been working on their speeches at home for presentation to the class in week 4. The winner of our class will become a Stage 2 finalist and present their speech to all of Stage 2 along with the other Stage 2 class winners. A Stage 2 winner will then be selected to present their speech along with other Stage finalists to the whole school where one overall winner will be chosen. I am looking forward to hearing all the wonderful things you have to say about your chosen topic!

Text Study: Our text study text for this term is called ‘Iggy Peck Architect’ which is wonderful rhyming story about a boy with a love for architecture who uses his under-appreciated knowledge and skills to save his teacher and classmates. This links wonderfully to our science unit which is called ‘What Are You Made Of?’.

Science: In this unit, students have been learning about the three states of matter and how they can change when heated or cooled. Soon we will be learning about the suitability of different materials for particular purposes. At the end of the term, the Jollybops Science Show will be returning to WPS to provide Stage 2 with an interactive experience full of experiments and activities. More details to follow.

Maths: Our focus continues to be number skills, particularly the ability to manipulate and regroup a number in various ways i.e. 745 is 7 hundreds, 4 tens and 5 ones but can also be regrouped as 74 tens and 5 ones or 7 hundreds and 45 ones. We are also covering content in Area, Angles Position and Data.

Creative Arts: Students are putting their acting skills to the test in Drama every Friday with Mrs Lawrence and a variety of visual art projects are being undertaken in class. If you get the chance, check out the wall outside our classroom for some fantastic artworks.

PDH/PE: Mrs Sturgess is continuing her PDH/PE program with the students. This will be supplemented with the gymnastics program once a week for four weeks starting in week 5. Athletics events are also being covered in 3-6 sport sessions on Friday afternoons.

Homework: Students are reminded to complete their home reading log at least 4 times a week and bring it in to get receive their ticks and dojo points. Students should be bringing home their spelling, sentence writing and times tables homework sheets every Monday and are due on the Friday of the same week.

That’s all for now!

P.S. Here are some photos of some very crazy Easter hairstyles from the end of last term!
